The mod inspired by the film based on the computer game - a tagline we're sure no marketeer would get away with using, but it nevertheless accurately describes Project: Resident Evil T-Virus. The mod is inspired by, yep you've guessed it, the 2002 film Resident Evil, itself based on the series of computer games which sold over 30 million copies since the first game appeared in 1996. It is the work of forum member "Vito Corleone" from Munich.

Central to the theme of this case are the two helical tubes containing the mysterious virus and an antivirus. For fans of the film, they are instantly recognisable and symbolise the film in the same way that a hat & whip makes us think of Indiana Jones or that a black Pontiac Trans Am will always remind us of Knight Rider. Failing that, there's always Milia Jovovich wearing very little, though arguably that could represent any number of films, bless her.

So how does one create a T-virus-in-a-bottle? The technique appears quite simple: mount two 6mm rods of acrylic on a block of wood using some common copper pipe as the central axis. Fix one end in a vise heat the rods using a hairdryer to make them flexible. Slowly turn the other end, thus creating the helix effect.

Mounted in some 40mm bore clear acrylic tube, the result is impressive. The illusion is complete by adding aluminium end caps. The clever part is to use UV-reactive acrylic so that under black light, the rods glow with an evil menace.

Vito Corleone is something of a watercooling nut, and plans to watercool no less than:
  • CPU
  • Northbridge
  • Southbridge
  • Graphics card
If you thought that was pretty hardcore, take a close look at the waterblocks - he made them all himself from scratch.

We're still waiting for the rest of the case to come together. It looks to be designed around an aluminium flight case - the kind that high-risk biohazard might well be transported in. Until his next update, Vito Corleone can only tease us with a stripped down 15" Eizo TFT from eBay featuring an ultra-sexy Umbrella Corp wallpaper, mirrored on the outside of the flight case in UV-reactive acrylic.

The Worklog hasn't been updated in a few weeks - by his own admission Vito Corleone is busy with his studies - but we hope he is able to dedicate some time to it soon. Drop by his Worklog Discussion thread and post words of encouragement.
